BIRM
Birm is the cheapest and most cost-effective media for iron removal in raw water supplies.
Capable of removing up to 8ppm of iron from water, it requires no chemicals for regeneration other
than a strong backwash flow rate. With adequate backwash the filter media should last 5 years,
however, Birm does come with some downsides. The pH needs to be more than 6.8 to be effective.
The backwash required is twice that of the service flow rate, so large pumps will need to be installed
to achieve this. The water can also not contain any organic matter as this will foul the filter bed.
